Each one of us has faced an interview at some point in our lives. While giving an interview the most paralyzing question is ‘Tell me something about yourself’?
The beauty of this question is, this can either break or make your game. I still remember my first interview, I was so nervous and as many of you, I too was rambling and therefore started talking incoherently. That’s why structuring this particular answer properly can fetch you that dream job you’ve always wanted.
But before that, have you ever wondered despite having a copy of your resume in hand why every interviewer asks this particular question? Starting from your educational details to your accomplishments everything is mentioned in that paper. Still, what he wants to know?
Here is a little secret- the interviewer wants to know two things from you: First, what is most important to you? Second, Are you fit for this job? They just want to know if your qualifications, experience, and your attitude are fit for that role or not.
Here are some tips to answer to Tell me something about yourself
1. Start with Who YOU are? What are you currently pursuing?
If you’re a fresher, start with your Introduction which includes your highest qualification with the institute’s name followed by your CGPA. If you have some experience you can extend the answer towards presenting your prowess in those aspects but make sure to keep it concise and crisp.
2. Accomplishments
For Fresher, you can talk about co-curricular and extracurricular activities you’ve participated in during college. Tell him about the training or internships you did to show how those skills relate to the job
you’re applying too. Make sure to tell every relevant experience you’ve had. If you have some experience, tell him the projects you worked on with the proof of performance.
3. How you are fit for this job?
Last but not least tell him how your skills are aligned with the job description. Some DOs and DONTs!
- Be confident while telling your story.
- Use excitement to convey your passion and slow down whenever you’ve to.
- Smile and proper eye contact is the key.
- Avoid using Superlatives.
- Don’t digress while talking. Speak only what is relevant to the job descriptionI can assure you that preparing this question with the template provided above will give you optimal confidence to ace any interview.
