Communication is part of our daily lives. It is an essential skill to survive in today’s world and the top skill which the interviewers look for in candidates while hiring. You can have the perfect resume and qualifications, but if you are unable to communicate properly during your interview, you still won’t be hired. I am going to share with you ” how to improve your communication skills” to make a great first impression to get the dream job.
Here are a few tips on ” how to improve your communication skills?”:
- Think before you speak: It’s important that you think twice before you speak, instead of blurting things out just to respond can prove to be a disadvantage in an interview.
- Talk slowly: When anxiety or nervousness takes over during an interview, you tend to lose control, resulting in speaking faster than necessary and giving poor answers. Answer questions at the right pace with a calm mind. Talking fast can be interpreted as you have to be somewhere else more important than the interview.
- Maintain eye contact: Maintaining proper eye contact is very important in an interview. It tells the interviewer that you know what you’re speaking and is confident about it. Also, the interviewer should not feel that you’re staring at him. Not kidding, this has happened with some people resulting in quite an awkward situation.
- Be knowledgeable about the company: Ensure before the big day, you have researched everything about the company what it is about, and what projects they are currently working on, their revenues, market growth, major accomplishments of the company. It helps the interviewer to know that you’re keen on working with them. Moreover, it increases your chances of getting hired.
- Be prepared: Every interview is independent of each other and it gets situational, there are some questions which you should prepare, like tell me about yourself, your strengths and weaknesses, about the company. Make sure you know your resume in and out because all the questions are raised from what you have written in that paper.
- Proper use of Words: Communication involves a lot of factors, such as how you speak, your body language, and the words you use. Inculcate the habit of reading in your day to improve your vocabulary which will help you to express yourself more easily.
- Keep it concise: When you answer, keep your answers short.Only give details whenever you have to support your answer with an incident otherwise avoid it.
- Listen: Listening is an important part of the communication because unlike hearing which does not involve the mind, it does. It will help you to give the right answers with a presence of mind.
- Support your answers with details/incidents: Everyone likes stories because they seem genuine and trustworthy. Make sure to explain everything with some incident or what you learned whilst you were doing/learning XYZ. For example, you could say, Last year when I did my internship in Digital marketing, I learned about SEO, Google analytics and also worked on-page ranking algorithms which gave me a good idea about it.
- Say the truth: The person taking your interview has been taking interviews for long and it won’t make him a minute to identify if you’re genuinely speaking or just bluffing. Once they catch you, you’re trapped and hence it might cost you your job offer too.
Last but not least, confidence is the key. It makes all the difference whether you will get a job. With Confidence, you can achieve anything in life and I hope with the points mentioned above you get your dream job.
