If someone asks you ‘What are the most difficult questions to answer during an interview’, “Why should we hire you?” will be on that list. You just can’t respond, “Because I need a job”. You have to be well prepared while answering this. Though the question seems like the focus is on you and your wants, it’s not. It’s all about whether you have got the right attitude towards work.
Despite how demanding the question is, it’s a really great opportunity, to sum up why you’re a good fit for the position and what makes you different from others. It is the best chance to tell the interviewer how you’re a good fit with the required skills and attitude. You have to give the interviewer a reason to choose you over those 50 people waiting outside. So, don’t be too humble or too arrogant while answering or worse to appear as if you are begging for the job.
Before you read this post, I would recommend you to check to tell me something about yourself which can be your first question.
WHY WE SHOULD HIRE YOU?
Here is a little scenario for a software engineer role,
Interviewer– Why should we hire you?
First Candidate– I am smart and hardworking. I have all the required skills which this job demands. I am proficient in Test Automation and java. I am a quick learner and coding is my passion. If given chance I can be an asset to your company as I am the best and no one can do this better than me. So, I deserve this job.
Second Candidate– From your job description, I notice you are looking for someone proficient in java and android. I have done certifications in both and have good exposure on the same. I have done or automated a couple of projects in my company, which helped me to get hands-on experience. I also helped my team member during my project which gave me lot of exposure of different situation or scenarios in the application. I also have basic knowledge in SQL, Python, Javascript. I am passionate about coding and want to grow professionally and personally with your company.
So,what is the difference between the two answers?
Though First Candidate has good technical and interpersonal skills the answer is not brief. The candidate has also used superlative (I am best) which you should never use in an interview. The second candidate has mentioned everything from skills to projects and his answer is brief and apt which makes him different from others.
Being a hiring manager, who would you choose? Clearly, the latter one. And why is that? Because it includes everything the interviewer wants to know which makes him/her the best fit.
Here is the formula for this particular answer.
- What does the company want?
- Stories because it adds a personal touch.
- What makes you different?
- What are you passionate about and what is it that motivates you in your personal life?
- Try to bring something different and more personal to the table.
What you should not do being in the hot seat?
- Don’t brag.
- Make sure your answer does not sound memorized but genuine.
- Do not use superlatives.
This is just a scenario but the interview may differ in real-time but I assure you if you add the above tips in your answer, you will pass a very important test.
